On the set of ‘Unscripted’ an interesting development was in progress: there was that opening shot which required the actors to enter the villa complex along with the ‘camera operator’ staged as the character ‘Karrie’ and holding her POV camera. The technical challenge was to record Karrie’s interactions and her dialogues with other actors while being next to the camera operator. But that alone wasn’t a challenge in itself but the humidity in the air which constantly fogged the lenses as we transitioned from the heat outside into the vastly cool villa hallways.
Having watched the John Carpenter Horror flick ‘Halloween (1978)’, there are uniquely distinctive POV shots from the killer ‘Mike Myers’ who wore a mask to conceal his identity and his very perspective from this mask showcased his hands holding a knife with murderous intent, in more than a single instance which prompted ‘the idea’. The idea that the character ‘Karrie’ who is supposedly holding the camera would instinctively use her hands and clean the fogged lens on her camera as would any camera enthusiast would do in situations such as this.
It also meant she would be in constant movement and in tandem with the camera operator at all times and this technique was used throughout in production in scenes which involved her responding in anger, pointing fingers , consolation and hand gestures ; building a more solid rationale as to ,”why someone would still point the camera at the person they’re arguing with or trying to console?”. It also helped the actress in mimicking the movement of the camera operator during CCTV shots which required the same movement as she acted the part.
